1. Introduction of School of Public Health

Dalian Medical University School of Public Health was founded in the 1950s, its predecessor was Hygiene Department of Dalian Medical College. In 1985, Health Management specialty was established. In 2006, Preventive Medicine specialty was established. The School of Public Health was set up in 2010. In the past 60 years, under the guidance of some renowned public health scientists and educators in China, such as Professor Qiao Shumin, Xia Yuanxun and Zhong Laifu, this college has developed into one of the schools of public health with complete disciplines, competitive teaching and scientific research competency. Undergraduate and graduate students cultivated from this school have been all over the world, many of them have become elites and backbones in areas such as public health, preventive medicine and health management.

Organizations and faculties
    School of Public Health now comprises 8 teaching and research sections, 2 teaching laboratories, 2 Liaoning provincial key disciplines and one Liaoning provincial health development research center. Currently there are 50 staff members in the school, including 17 professors and 13 associate professors ; among them 6 are doctoral supervisors and 25 are master supervisors, with 2 experts receiving special government allowance from the State Council , one expert awarded as the national May 1st labor medal winner, one expert hired as distinguished Professor in Cheung Kong Scholars of Ministry of Education, one person awarded as young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contribution,  one person selected for New Century Talents Project and awarded as young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contribution, one person awarded as climbing scholar in Liaoning province, one person awarded as "high-end talent" in Liaoning province, one expert awarded as prize winner of Fok Ying-tong education foundation for young teachers, one expert selected in support plan for talents in colleges and universities of Liaoning province, and 3 experts awarded as members of Talents Project in Liaoning province.

Scientific research and international exchanges
     In recent years, the School of Public Health has undertaken more than 100 national and provincial scientific research projects. More than 300 academic papers have been published in domestic and international journals, of which there are more than 50 SCI papers. One expert was selected as "2014 China highly cited scholars". Over 50 monographs and teaching materials were published. In teaching and scientific research, School of Public Health establishes and maintains sound cooperative relations with Ohio state university school of public health, British university, Benedict University and Australian Curtin University. With educational internationalization, School of Public Health will further intensify international cooperation, increase opportunities of international exchange for students and cultivate superior public health talents

Education of undergraduate and postgraduate students
Secondary disciplines as social medicine and health management, epidemiology and health statistics, occupational and environmental health, nutrition and food hygiene, hygienic toxicology are open to recruit undergraduate and postgraduate students. In 2014, it began to recruit PhD students of health management. In 2013, cooperation with Benedictine University for master of public health (MPH) was open to recruit graduates and on-the-job personnel, and master degree certificate of Benedict University would be awarded after graduation. At present, there are over 660 enrollment students at school, including 6 PhDs, more than 100 postgraduates and 553 undergraduates. Besides, there are 90 people of master of public health (MPH).

2 Introduction of specialties
School of Public Health now has two undergraduate majors, preventive medicine and health management.

Preventive medicine: The Department of Preventive Medicine began to recruit students in 2006. It aims at cultivating senior public health personnel with fundamental skills of public health and preventive medicine, being capable of conducting health monitoring and health supervision, disease control, health promotion and health administration management, engaging in the practical work of public health, preventive medicine and scientific research. Students primarily study basic medicine, clinical medicine, basic theory and practice of preventive medicine, so that they would acquire strong communicative ability and public health practice ability after graduation.

Employment direction: The graduates have wide employment domains, ranging from clinical research work, such as clinical epidemiological research, research institute of endemic diseases, to health and epidemic prevention, health management, social medical research, environmental protection and surveillance, customs and quarantine, etc.

Public Affairs Management: The objective is to cultivate high-quality talents capable of working at party and government organs of all levels, enterprises and institutions, especially all kinds of public organizations, engaged in management, research and education. Through the teaching design of course system such as public utilities management, wisdom health care, health management, management of medical institutions, health management, health care and statistics, it helps students to attain a comprehensive development and raise their comprehensive ability to advance social well-being and promote medical and health development.

Employment direction: party and government organs, enterprises and institutions, social organizations, administrative and management work in public service system.

3. Characteristics
Preventive Medicine advocates a talent-training mode characterized with its internationalization and application, paying attention to the cultivation of student's practical ability and application ability. Attention is paid to the promotion of internationalized education, such as mutual visits between undergraduate students with Ohio State University so as to broaden students' international vision; cooperation with Liaoning provincial disease control and prevention centers; inviting experts with practical work experience from centers for disease control and prevention, health supervision, maternal and child health care to classroom to realize the cultivation of applied talents of public health. Student-centeredness is emphasized from curriculum design to teaching process, so as to build a comprehensive knowledge system, and cultivate public health personnel with practical capabilities and competitiveness.

As a comprehensive reform specialty of Liaoning province, Public Affairs Management Department comprehensively highlights the characteristics of "all-round development, internationalization", all teaching reforms are based on the latest education theory and practice at home and abroad, successively setting up practice bases in national, provincial, municipal government bodies and medical and health working cites to meet the needs of teaching. Great importance is attached to the transformation from scientific research to teaching, a large number of undergraduates carry out innovative scientific research work and entrepreneurship under the guidance of teachers, taking an active part in social practice, and forming a sustainable platform for students to study and practice in health management, health affairs management, operation and management of medical institutions. Some programs have been supported by Liaoning province and the university. Student competencies are widely acknowledged by domestic and foreign counterparts, and praised by employers.

Achievements of students’ activities: To promote the growth of college students is always taken as a top priority. Ideological education is stressed to promote students to grow up, ideal faith education is administered as the core to help students build up correct world outlook, outlook on life and values. Constructions of study style and professional characteristics are combined in an organic way, scientific research is initiated to inspire students' learning interest and enthusiasm; innovation is encouraged to improve the students' ability of employment; guidance is also given to help students be diligent, creative and dedicated personnel. In the past three years, more than 60 students has won the honorary title of municipal or above levels, a number of groups and individuals won awards in Liaoning province "challenge cup" extracurricular science and technology works competition and entrepreneurship competition; the enrollment of postgraduates entrance exam is over 40% per year on average.
